The ‘Pool’ Garden Makeover

Did I mention we own a pool?  In fact, it’s a huge in-ground pool that just happens to be smack dab in the middle of our front yard!….you heard me, a pool in the front yard.  Did I also mention that the previous owners filled the pool in with dirt?…yep, dirt!…a non-functioning pool filled with dirt in the middle of our front yard. What’s a girl to do??

This garden was a labor of love (a.k.a landscaping 911!).  Almost every member of our families had a part in remodeling the ‘pool’; from my mother-in-law pulling out the overgrowth, my brother pulling the rocks out of the front, and finally my mom helping me to select the perennials and fill it in with mulch (35 bags of mulch to be exact!!). Thanks everyone! 🙂

This photo was taken about halfway through the process. There was a rusted fire pit, bird bath, and sandbox that were all left in the space, and were given away on craigslist. It took hours to pull all the weeds and overgrowth out and turn the soil!!

I love the way our ‘pool’ garden turned out! Although it is still a work in progress, I know it will grow bigger and more beautiful each year! 🙂

I used these pavers which I found on the side of the house as the steps for a pathway, and filled the area around them with small stones.

It took six bags of stones to create this pathway. I eventually may try to expand it.

This beautiful trellis was left by the previous owner, and I planted a clematis at the base.

I used rocks found in various parts of the yard to frame these hanging rods, which I’m slowing adding annuals to.  I really want to add some boulder rocks to the mix, so there may be some forest walks with a wheel barrel involved this summer. 😉

I’m growing watermelon, tomatoes, strawberries, and basil in the front. I’ve never grown watermelon, so this will be an adventure!

My mom gave me four kinds of ground cover which I transplanted from my parents’ yard.  Hopefully it will continue to spread here!

I can't wait for the ground cover to come back bigger and better next year!

I hope this post gives you the confidence to turn your own yard eyesore into a landscaping focal point! 🙂
The hardest part of this entire process is having the patience to let the garden grow!

This looks terrific!!! Who’d have thought that a pool in the front yard could turn out so wonderful. I love how you were able to recycle so many different things from what the previous owners left! Great job!
